Mandarin Oriental Offers Special Chinese New Year Contest

Conveniently located on the southwest waterfront, Mandarin Oriental, Washington D.C. is the only hotel that offers views of the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument, Tidal Basin and Washington Marina. One thing is for sure — there is certainly no where better to ring in the Chinese New Year! With the Chinese New Year quickly approaching, Mandarin Oriental, Washington D.C. is preparing for its annual gala and is asking the public to “Dub the Dragon,” or submit the best dragon pet name.  The winning name will win two tickets to the Gala on 25 January, and an overnight stay in the Presidential Suite*. “The Year of the Dragon has always ushered in excitement and exhilaration,” said General Manager Amanda Hyndman.  “To have a contest to name the dragon brings those characteristics to the forefront, engages our guests, and allows us to celebrate our Oriental heritage in a fun and unique way.”

2012: The Year of the Dragon
Chinese New Year is a time to welcome longevity, wealth and prosperity and to eliminate any negative chi from the past. This fourteen day celebration is very symbolic, and steeped in many traditions, including dedicating each year to a specific animal. The Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Rat, Boar, Rabbit, Dog, Rooster, Ox, Tiger, Snake, and Ram are the twelve animals that are part of this tradition. In 2012, the Dragon is welcomed back, and while 2011, the Year of the Rabbit, was characterized by calm and tranquility, the Year of the Dragon will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity.

Entries can be submitted via email at Please include your name and phone number and suggested name.  Contest runs from now to 20 January 2012, and the winner will be announced on 23 January.  For more information, please visit the Mandarin Oriental website.
